A boy makes a promise to God that if his prayer is answered, he won’t do a certain something. A boy gets very angry at God and refuses to pray for a time, thinking He isn’t all-powerful or all-merciful. It was out of bitterness these things were thought. It is thought that a woman was a wanderer and a “traipsing” woman and that she had probably killed her husband, but she had not. It is thought that a woman is a witch but she is not. This book would make a good read-aloud for families with slightly older children who are mature enough to handle scriptural debates on various topics and a hero that sorely looses faith before believing again.Ĭleanliness: This book has a few mentions of old superstitions and a vast amount of quoting scripture to prove your own notions. Though not perfect characters, they certainly grow towards the light. One learning to let go of bitterness and the other learning about faith (in the good times and bad). This book has strong character development, from both Granny and Jeremiah. From there, the story moves from convincing his grandmother to let him keep it for a time, taking care of and keeping the lamb out of mischief, and finally, the big scheme to make Granny keep him forever. One is black and Jerry immediately falls in love with it. One stormy night in the barn, two lambs are born.

The tapestry of his ancestry is slowly revealed as his Granny makes her storied cover (quilt) and the ballad to go with it. Jeremiah is an orphan boy being raised by his scripture-quoting Grandmother who has, until now, kept his past from him. It’s an incredibly well-written story! Engaging from the start, musical in both its narrative and dialogue, and rich in delightful but not over-abundant description.
